How to Make Panini - Tips

Are you looking for a great sandwich, then consider the Italian Panini.  A tasty grilled sandwich which is quickly becoming the talk of the town.  Although this sandwich doesn't have to be grilled, it adds an additional tasty element and the wonderful smell of cooked bread!  When the panini has been grilled it allows for the melting and caramelizing of the ingredients giving it a distinct wonderful flavor.  

Panini is a easy and tasty sandwich to make and you can blend your own ingredients however you choose. To make Panini Italian sandwich includes the ingredients:

  • Bread
  • Meat
  • Vegetables
  • Cheeses

When using bread for your Panini consider a dense type like the Foccacia or Ciabetta. Heavy dense breads tends to not dry out in your press during the cooking process. The bread also needs to hold all the "stuffing" ingredients inside  and that the panini grills evenly and does not crumble or fall apart.

Panini are easy to make and you can even make your own blend anyway you want.

Meats vary from Salami, pepperoni, and prosciutto are commonly used for this grill cooking method  as the meat is cured.

Keep in mind that meats you choose, to be precooked and thinly sliced for even heat distribution as you are only reheating the meat!

Consider adding thin slices of cheeses, cheese spreads or even crumbled cheese on for additional flavors.  If you want another element of taste experiment with condiments like mustard, horse radish or salad dressings.

Including vegetables also an important factor but add lettuces after grilling to keep crisp and cool before serving. Try grilling the vegetables separately before assembling all your ingredients in  your panini to grill.

There are hundreds of different panini ingredients that can be combined that will make mouth watering sandwich! 

A panini press can vary in price and are a great investment.  Prices vary, however consider you usually get what you pay for.  Consider the features when buying a Panini Press:

  • Having a variable temperature control to find the right temperature for toasting and not burning is very helpful.
  • Variable temperature control, to allow for grilling and melting and avoid burning 
  • A non stick grilling surface makes it easy for clean up with removable plates. 
  • To allow for different thicknesses of sandwich a floating lid feature is key.

You can serve Panini for every occasion you choose - be it breakfast, lunch or dinner.  Consider cutting  into bite sizes and serve them as -

hors d'oeuvre!
